Unemployment benefits

The unemployment benefit is intended to partially compensate for your loss of income when you become unemployed. In order to be eligible for unemployment benefits, you must first register as a job seeker at the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration (NAV).

In Norway, like elsewhere, your chances of quickly getting a job will be better if you are flexible regarding the type of job you are applying for and the places where you can work. It is always wise to start looking for work as soon as possible.

  • To be entitled to an unemployment benefit, your normal working hours must generally have been reduced by at least 50 per cent. You must also live and reside in Norway, be willing to perform any kind of job and register as a job seeker at NAV.
