We have a vacancy for a PhD candidate at Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.
The PhD position is in the Robotics and Automation group. The research group has a large robot laboratory with a wide range of robots, robotic tools and vision systems, and includes computer solutions based on ROS, industrial protocols and Industry 4.0. The research benefits from a synergy between the manufacturing industry with its strong focus on cost effective operations, and the offshore and maritime industries with high-value products in small batches. The scholarship is one of four PhD scholarships financed by a project on robotic welding of large aluminium structures, where the objective is to combine geometric data from CAD with robotic vision for efficient planning and execution of robotic welding. The project is a KPN project funded by the Research Council of Norway and the industrial partners, which are Hydro, Leirvik, Norsk Aluminium and Digitread.

Main duties and responsibilities
- The candidate will work on robotic vison for tracking of weld seams, and for trajectory planning and online adjustment of multi-pass welding operations.
- The solutions will be implemented in the robot laboratory of the department, which includes state-of-the-art robots, vision systems, laser scanners and welding equipment.
- The focus will be on geometric methods for computer vison and laser scanning in combination with methods for the determination of weld seam features. The handling of highly reflective aluminium surfaces will be important.
The PhD-position's main objective is to qualify for work in research positions. The qualification requirement is completion of a master’s degree or second degree (equivalent to 120 credits) with a strong academic background in Robotics, Computer Vision and Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent education, with a grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be considered only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree.
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants and national guidelines for appointment as PhD, postdoctor and research assistant

- The candidate should be proficient in kinematics and geometric methods for industrial robots and robot vision systems, and the development of software for such systems.
- Experience with ROS, OpenCV, Matlab, Python, and C++ is desired
- Good written and oral English, and preferably Norwegian, language skills
- Strong analytical skills
- Good English communication skills, both oral and written
- Positive attitude and interested in teamwork

Salary and conditions
PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross from NOK 449 400 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2 % is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criterias in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
