Offer Description
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher within the Palaeoenvironmental Research Unit, Geography, at the University of Galway, Ireland.
This position is funded by a Research Ireland / Geological Survey Ireland award held by Dr. Gordon Bromley and is available from 1/6/2026 to contract end date of 1/12/2027.
The Palaeoenvironmental Research Unit is dedicated to examining the causes and mechanisms of natural climate variability, and the nature of human-climate interactions. The successful candidate will join the GeoPAC2 project (Geologic Perspectives on Abrupt Climate Change: Strengthening Ireland’s capacity for projecting future change), which utilises the geological record of glacial change during the last glacial-interglacial transition to isolate seasonal climate parameters needed for modelling future climate. The postdoctoral researcher will be tasked with mining European terrestrial palaeoclimate datasets and identifying seasonality indicators among diverse proxy records to advance our understanding of potential bias in existing climate model targets. The postdoctoral researcher will also conduct numerical glacier-climate modelling from GeoPAC2 project output.
Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale €46,805 - €59,654 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.
The default position for all new public sector appointments is the 1st point of the salary scale. This may be reviewed, and consideration afforded to appointment at a higher point on the pay scale (subject to the project’s funding limitations), where evidence of prior years’ equivalent experience is accepted in determining placement on the scale above point 1, subject to the maximum of the scale.
(Research Salary Scales - University of Galway)
Closing date for receipt of applications is 17:00 (Irish Time) on Monday 30/3/2026. It will not be possible to consider applications received after the closing date.
