Offer Description

The Department of Mathematics of Kiel University is seeking to fill a position as

 

research assistant (PhD position)

 

by October 1, 2026. The position is initially limited to a period of three years. The regular weekly working time is 75% of a full-time position (currently 29.025 hours per week). The salary is based on pay group 13 TV-L, provided the tariff requirements are met. The position involves a regular weekly teaching load of 3 hours (LVS).

The position entails conducting research in the field of functional analysis, with the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree. In addition to advancing their academic qualifications, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching in mathematics and assist in the supervision of student theses. Active participation in the administrative and organizational responsibilities of the institute is also required.

Specific Requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a Master’s degree in Mathematics and to have excellent knowledge of functional analysis. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in research projects in the areas of operator algebras, analytic group theory, and/or noncommutative harmonic analysis. Excellent command of the English language, both written and spoken (minimum level C1, documentation not required), is required. Furthermore, applicants are expected to acquire sufficient knowledge of German within one year to be able to participate actively in teaching activities.
