Summary:
A research position for one Research Grant (“Bolsa de Iniciação à Investigação“) is open at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of the Project PC SQI, UID/50008/2025 – Instituto de Telecomunicações. This project is funded by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., and, when eligible, co-funded by EU funds under project/support UID/50008/2025 – Instituto de Telecomunicações, with DOI identifier - https://doi.org/10.54499/UID/50008/2025
This short-term academic grant supports an undergraduate student in conducting exploratory research on innovative approaches to user privacy through interaction design. The grant is intended to foster early-stage research that can lead to more extensive studies or pilot implementations in the future, strengthening academic understanding and practical design strategies for improving user privacy and security awareness.

Work Objectives:
This short-term research project investigates how interaction design can support users in understanding and managing their online privacy. The study focuses on synthesizing existing research on privacy-related user experience (UX) design and developing preliminary design concepts (low-fidelity prototypes) that embody these principles. The goal is to identify promising design directions that improve transparency, user trust, and control over personal data.

Place of work:
The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações – Lisboa, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Paulo Mateus.

Duration:
3,5 months, with the possibility of renewal (according to the regulations defined by FCT). Start date: April 16th, 2026 or soon thereafter.

Admission Requirements:
Research Initiation Grants are intended:
- for students enrolled in a professional higher technical course, undergraduate degree, integrated master's degree or master's degree, to undertake initial R&D activities, with a view to beginning their scientific training through integration in R&D projects to be developed in national institutions.
- for students with an undergraduate degree carrying out initial R&D activities who are enrolled in non-degree courses integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units.

In what concerns the admission requirements for this research initiation grant in particular:
- The ideal candidate is an undergraduate student in a relevant field with proven proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and Figma.
- A strong command of written and spoken English, along with an understanding of interaction design principles, is required.
- It is required that the candidate be enrolled in a relevant Bachelor's degree program.
The candidates are eligible if not awarded previously a scholarship funded direct or indirectly by FCT, celebrated according to “Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”.

Benefits

Monthly salary:
651,12€ according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Tabela_valores_SMM_2025.p…).
The payment will be made by bank transfer.

Selection process

Selection criteria:

    Suitability of the candidates’ profile to the project based on the relevant work experience in the tasks described in the work plan
  • C3 (20%)
    Fluency in oral and written English


Each criteria, and the final classification F will be evaluated in a scale (0-20). The candidates will be ordered according to:
F = C1 x 40% + C2 x 40% + C3 x 20%
In case of a tie, the tied candidates will be ordered according to C1, then C2...
The Jury has the right to not admit any of the candidates that applied for this position whenever they consider that no candidate meets the minimum requirements for the position.
