Riga Technical University (RTU) invites applications for a professor in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Information Engineering with specilization in Systems Analysis, Modelling and Design Computer Science and Informatics at the Institute of Applied Computer Systems (IACS), Faculty of Computer Science, Information Technology and Energy (FCSITE), with an indicative research theme: Artificial Intelligence – Natural Language Processing or Explainable AI.
This is a professor position at RTU with a guaranteed centralized funding for a six-year full appointment . After the six-year appointment, further employment and funding of the position are expected to be supported through the institute’s funding portfolio, including competitive research projects, teaching-related resources, and other institutional funding sources, in accordance with RTU regulations.

The Institute of Applied Computer Systems conducts internationally recognised research and education in systems analysis, modelling and simulation, intelligent information systems, and software-intensive systems engineering. The Institute plays a key role in advancing data-driven, intelligent, and trustworthy computational solutions addressing complex challenges at the intersection of computer science, engineering, and applied artificial intelligence.
The professor position is established to strengthen RTU’s research and teaching capacity in Artificial Intelligence, with a particular focus on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and/or Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). The indicative research theme includes, but is not limited to, natural language understanding and generation, multilingual and low-resource language technologies, human-centred and explainable AI methods, interpretable machine learning, trustworthy and responsible AI, and the integration of NLP and XAI methods into complex systems and decision-support platforms.
The successful candidate is expected to develop an internationally visible and competitive research direction in Artificial Intelligence, establish and lead a research group, and contribute to the strategic development of AI research and education at Riga Technical University. The appointed professor will actively contribute to Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral study programmes within FCSITE and strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration across the University.

We expect the candidate to:
- Choose and strengthen research areas within Artificial intelligence.
- Establish and lead your own academic and research group by attracting innovative, ambitious, cooperation-oriented researches and scientists from RTU and outside it;
- Lead and implement national and international scientific research projects,
- Attract external research funding, by contributing to, managing and implementing grant proposals and research projects;
- Develop new and improve existing study courses in the area of Artificial Intelligence
- To introduce innovations in the study process by conducting lectures for master's and doctoral students of the university;
- Supervise students' final theses, especially Master and Doctoral thesis. At the moment there is a specialisation in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics on a master’s level with ~50 Latvian and International students per annum in it;
- Promote international academic and scientific cooperation by representing RTU both at the national and international events.
- Publish the research results in high level international peer-reviewed journals (Q1/Q2).
- Contribute to publicity and engage in educational activities, including media interviews (radio/television), public talks, lectures, workshops.
We invite candidates who meet the following requirements:
- Doctoral degree (PhD) in Computer Science or a closely related field
- At least (3) three years of experience in the position of associate professor, professor, or an equivalent experience in a corresponding position, and internationally recognised experience in Artificial Intelligence – Natural Language Processing or Explainable AI, or a related field;
- Documented experience in securing external funding;
- Excellent communication skills;
- Advanced soft-skills, scientific curiosity and readiness to engage in a highly interdisciplinary environment;
- Advanced teambuilding and teamwork skills;
- Full professional proficiency in English.

A permanent tenured position with a gross salary of EUR 6,050 per month for a full-time position.
Opportunities to increase overall remuneration are available through attracting and leading externally funded research projects, in accordance with project conditions and RTU regulations.
