Offer Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher with a PhD in law (or a confirmed defense date prior to the appointment) who has demonstrated experience in conducting high-quality research at the intersection of law and digitalization. Through excellent research and teaching, this researcher will actively contribute to the goals of the SSH-Breed Sector Plan “The Influence of Digitalization on Work, Prosperity and Entrepreneurship”.

Job description
The position available is for an Assistant Professor in Digitalization (1 FTE) for a maximum duration of 12 months. The position is financed through temporary program funds; an extension is not possible. The focus is on aspects of digitalization from a legal perspective. The ideal candidate will have an international outlook and a keen interest in examining how digitalization influences, and is influenced by, law, society and institutions.

Specifically, research interests should align with at least one – and preferably more – of the following areas: regulatory compliance in the European multi-level legal framework, due diligence processes on technology acquisition, governance, and risk assessment, digital fairness and transparency, digital ecosystem engagement, and the geopolitical implications of digital sovereignty. The candidate should demonstrate familiarity with legal doctrine and expertise in cross-disciplinary research across law, technology, and public policy, as evidenced by a robust portfolio of (prospective) research output.

Furthermore, the ideal candidate should demonstrate expertise in analyzing policy and legal challenges arising from digitalization, drawing on both academic research and industry practice. Experience in collaborating with stakeholders – such as policymakers, industry experts, or civil society – is highly valued. Lastly, the candidate should be able to complement theoretical knowledge with quantitative empirical methods.

The successful candidate will conduct independent, interdisciplinary research within the multidisciplinary SSH-Breed Sector Plan “The Influence of Digitalization on Work, Prosperity, and Entrepreneurship”, which examines the societal impacts of digitalization. This position is embedded into the Erasmus Centre for Law and Digitalization (ECLD), a collaborative center that brings together researchers from all four departments of Erasmus School of Law, united by a shared interest in law and digitalization. The ECLD fosters a supportive environment where team members learn from one another, encourage collaboration, and strive to advance their expertise in law and digitalization.

The candidate is expected to actively build and maintain relevant academic and societal networks to support research within this program and contribute to securing research funding. In addition to research responsibilities, the candidate will contribute to teaching at the bachelor’s and/or master’s levels throughout the academic year. For this position, the workload consists of 80% research and 20% teaching.

Requirements

Specific Requirements
  • A PhD in law (or a confirmed defense date prior to the appointment).
  • Strong academic credentials, evidenced by international publications in the field of law and digitalization.
  • A strong methodological foundation, including doctrinal legal analysis and empirical research methods, to complement theoretical knowledge.
  • Expertise in analyzing policy and legal challenges of digitalization, integrating academic research and industry insights.
  • An enterprising, inquisitive, results-oriented, and socially conscious mindset.
