Offer Description

The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for the post of Professor of Data Engineering, especially data analysis methods, at the School of Computing of the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology on the Kuopio or Joensuu campus. The position will be filled from 1 September 2026 (or as agreed).

Role and salary

At the School of Computing at the University of Eastern Finland (website) we provide meaningful and international education and research to meet the future needs and challenges of society and working life. Our internationally acclaimed research focuses on artificial intelligence (AI), data science, and future technologies. AI and data mining have long been utilised in many fields, and data use and analysis are set to increase in the future.

We are seeking a motivated and ambitious professor whose field of research and teaching is data engineering. Related research topics include, among others, advanced artificial intelligence–based data analysis methods and the pipelining of large datasets for analytical purposes. In terms of methodological expertise, particular value is placed on the integration of software engineering with data analysis. The duties include conducting, developing and leading research in the field and related national and international education, as well as responsibility for doctoral education in the discipline.

The professorship involves securing external complementary research funding and promoting international research cooperation and networking in the field. The position also includes societal expert and interaction duties.

The post of Professor will be filled as of 1 September 2026 (or as agreed) until further notice. A trial period is applied to all new members of staff.

External expert evaluation will be used in recruitment. Expert statements are part of the overall evaluation process for the position. Interviews related to the filling of the position will be arranged separately.

The salary of the post is based on the salary system for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. The salary is based on levels 8-11 (EUR 5.471,95–8.063,25 /month) of the job requirement level chart of the salary system for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition to the job-related salary element, the salary is supplemented with a personal salary element, which can be a maximum of 50% of the job-related salary element.

Qualification requirements of the position are:

  • a doctoral degree in a relevant field
  • good teaching skills
  • scientific qualification and demonstrated research expertise in the research area of the position
  • the teaching language for this position can be English.
