Offer Description

Scientific Advisor: Paulo Manuel Cadete Ferrão (ist12361)
Organic Unit: Centre for Studies in Innovation, Technology and Development Policies
Scholarship Theme: Modelling of the characterization of the building stock for embodied carbon analysis at the urban or
national scale
Duration: 12 months
Maximum Duration Including Renewals: 24 months

Objectives
Characterization of embodied carbon in the constructive solutions of the building stock and in urban interventions on an
urban or national scale
Work Plan
1 . Collection, systematization and processing of data from the building stock
• Compilation of national and municipal databases (e.g. INE, building matrix, municipal GIS, cadastres).
• Harmonization of construction typologies, materials, ages and states of conservation.
• Creation of data structures suitable for urban/macro-scale modeling.
2. Development of models for the characterization of the building stock
• Construction of parametric or statistical models that allow the stock of buildings to be characterized according to
typologies, materials and construction elements.
• Implementation of algorithms to estimate materials and embodied carbon intensities based on construction catalogs,
EPDs and LCA databases.
3. Modelling and calculation of embodied carbon at the urban or national scale
• Application of the models to the territory (city, region or country), integrating spatial data (GIS).
• Estimation of embodied carbon by typology, neighborhood, municipality or sector, with scenery (new vs. existing,
renovation vs. replacement, future projections).
