Offer Description
Comenius University in Bratislava, Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences, Institute of Social Anthropology, offer full time PhD position starting from September 2025, in the research topic:
Supervisor: Mgr. Andrej Mentel, PhD.
Topic: Ethnicity, Trust, and Religious Affiliation in Contemporary Muslim Communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina
(available in Slovak: Rod, dôvera a náboženská príslušnosť v súčasných moslimských komunitách Bosny a Hercegoviny)
Osobitná pozornosť bude venovaná tomu, či kontakt so súfijskými tradíciami vytvára špecifické formy náboženskej skúsenosti, sociálnej podpory a komunitnej integrácie.
Dizertačná práca by mala vychádzať z dlhodobého etnografického výskumu a prispieť k antropologickému poznaniu súčasného bosnianskeho islamu, rodovo diferencovaných foriem náboženského života a vzťahu medzi religiozitou, dôverou a solidaritou v postsocialistickom mestskom prostredí.
This dissertation aims to examine gender-specific forms of Muslim religiosity in the urban environment of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The study will focus primarily on women who shape their religious identity, daily piety, and social ties through contact with local religious communities, particularly in Sufi-oriented settings.
The research will examine how relationships of trust, belonging, and solidarity are formed and maintained in these environments, how they are interconnected with family, neighbourhood, and urban life, and what roles religious practices, informal women’s networks, and authorities play within them. Particular attention will be paid to whether contact with Sufi traditions creates specific forms of religious experience, social support, and community integration. The dissertation should be based on long-term ethnographic research and contribute to anthropological understanding of contemporary Bosnian Islam, gender-differentiated forms of religious life, and the relationship between religiosity, trust, and solidarity in a post-socialist urban environment.
PhD study programme Social anthropology encompasses the knowledge on human society, communities, and cultures in their various shapes, on their functioning, evolution and interactions, obtained by means of long-term ethnographic fieldwork.
