The successful candidate will undertake research tasks on the project:
"Deciphering the Constraints Governing Plastic Biodegradation in Marine Environments - MAREDéCO (PID2025-173789OB-I00)".
Tasks will cover goals 1 and 2 of the project, aimed at understanding plastic degradation constraints in marine environments.
Activities include synthesis and preparation of polymeric materials and differential media for biodegradation potential, as well as designing and running screening assays for biodegradation potential in environmental microbial communities under different salinity conditions.
The position involves developing and optimising experimental methodologies, assessing biodegradation activity in microbial communities and analysing responses to different polymeric materials and environmental conditions.
The successful candidate will work closely with Dr Christie-Oleza, Dr Nogales and Dr Bosch, contributing to experimental design, execution, data analysis, interpretation of results and scientific communication.

Skills/Qualifications
A Degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or similar.
A Master's Degree in Microbiology or similar.
Specific Requirements
Microbiology and molecular biology skills applied to environmental microorganisms.
Knowledge of polymer biodegradation and plastic materials in marine environments.
Skills in preparing, handling and characterising polymeric materials.
Skills in designing and developing experimental methodologies to study biodegradation processes.
A solid command of English would be a plus.

Gross monthly salary: 1,850.00 €

Sunday, May 16, 2027
Compensation may be higher where the successful candidate accredits recognised professional experience.
Eligibility criteria
• Curricular merits in the field (max. 40 points).
• Qualifications in the specialist area (max. 20 points), other (max. 5 points).
• Video curriculum and, if applicable, personal interview (max. 20 points).
• Experience in the field (max. 15 points). E.g.: > 3 years (10 points), < 3 years (5 points).
• Other merits (max. +5 points). E.g.: recommendation letters.
Eligibility threshold: 60 points.
Candidates who hold the qualification corresponding to the required category in the job offer with a non-EU degree, if selected, must present a certificate of equivalence of their non-EU qualification to a European qualification, or proof of having applied for this equivalence, in order to proceed with their hiring.
Selection process
In accordance with article 8 of the REGULATORY AGREEMENT 145140 of 15th June 2022 that approves the regulation governing the recruitment of research staff under chapter 6 allocation of the university budget, as well as technical or operational research staff.

i. The relevant Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research (or person s/he delegates), as chair.
ii. The supervisor (or person s/he delegates).
iii. The members of the Research Area Assessment Committee (CARAI).
iv. One or more expert members in the topic pertaining to recruitment, where appropriate.
v. The head of the Management Office for the Research Promotion and Human Resources Programme (or person s/he delegates), acting as secretary.
