Offer Description
At the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Ciências ULisboa), a call is open for awarding 1 (one) research initiation scholarship at the Ciências ULisboa, financed by funded by a donation from the family of Ciências ULisboa Carolina Fernandes-Henriques student (BII-CAROLINA FERNANDES-HENRIQUES), according to the following conditions:
Work plan:
- Development of a work plan by the candidate and their academic supervisor;
- Development and submission of the final report, in accordance with the rules laid down by the Academic Supervisor and the FCT, I.P.;
- Presentation of the work carried out (poster or oral presentation) at a laboratory meeting open to guests selected by the scholarship selection committee and the research supervisor.
Fellowship duration:
The grant is expected to start in January 2026. The contract, with a duration of 05 (five) months, on an exclusive basis, without the possibility of renewal.
Form of presentation of applications:
Applications may be sent by e-mail, to the address candidaturas@ciencias.ulisboa.pt, with the reference "BII-CAROLINA FERNANDES-HENRIQUES", under penalty of not being considered for the competition.
Applications must include, without exception and under penalty of exclusion, the following documents in PDF format. No document required to be submitted at the time of application may be submitted after the deadline for submission:
- Personal data form and declaration of consent for communication of results via e-mail;
- Declaration under oath;
- Proof of enrolment, in the academic year 2026/2027, in a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, an Erasmus programme or a minor, both within the framework of the Bachelor’s degree in Biology;
- Proof showing that the applicant has no more than one module outstanding at the time of application;
- Evidence of participation in extracurricular activities, such as sport, the arts, volunteering, membership of organisations, working-student status or other relevant civic engagement activities;
- Detailed and updated Curriculum Vitae;
- Motivation letter;
- Declaration by the Academic Supervisor;
- Photocopy of the qualification certificate of the academic degree required;
- If the academic degree, required in the present announcement as an admission requirement for the type of scholarship in question, was obtained abroad, you must submit one of the following documents: (See also the NOTES below)
- Document proving the granting, by a Portuguese Institution, of the recognition, equivalence or registration of the academic degree;
- Document proving that you have already applied for the recognition of the degree, which application must be submitted by the deadline for receipt of applications, inclusive.
Notes:
1) The presentation of the proof of obtaining the recognition or equivalence or registration of the academic degree is a mandatory condition for signing the contract;
2) For academic degrees obtained in foreign countries, which have not yet obtained either recognition or equivalence or registration of the degree, it is necessary to recognise it, under the terms provided for in Decree Law no. 66/2018, of 16 August, combined with Ordinance no. 33/2019, of 25 January, as currently amended

Skills/Qualifications
Candidates must fulfil the following mandatory requirements:
- Be enrolled, for the 2026/2027 academic year, at Ciências ULisboa;
- Be in the third year of a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, an Erasmus programme or a minor as part of a Bachelor’s degree in Biology;
- Not to have more than one module outstanding at the time of application;
- Demonstration of an interest in scientific research through a letter of motivation;
- Declaration by the Academic Supervisor;
- Proven participation in extracurricular activities, such as sport, the arts, volunteering, membership of organisations, working-student status or other relevant civic engagement activities.
Specific Requirements
Preference will be given to candidates with the following requirements:
- Good academic performance;
- A strong motivation for research;
- Active involvement in sporting, civic, social and cultural initiatives;
- A multidisciplinary background and a spirit of initiative.

Benefits
Monthly allowance and social security:
The fellowship amount corresponds to € 701,12 (seven hundred and one euros and twelve cents), according to FCT Regulation for Research Fellowships, published by Regulation no. 950/2019 in the Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 241, of 16th of December, as currently amended, and available in the site of FCT, I.P..
It will be paid monthly by bank transfer;
- The financing entities shall not bear the costs arising from any voluntary social insurance contributions that the grant holder may incur, in accordance to the no. 5, of article no. 10 of the Law 40/2004, of 18th of August, as currently amended.
Selection process
Selection criteria:
The selection methods to be applied are as follows:
Stage 1 — Assessment with the following weightings:
- academic assessment: 70%;
- non-academic assessment: 30%.
Stage 2 — Selection interview, to be held only if the selection panel so decides, focusing on the three (3) highest-ranked candidates from Stage 1.
Should a selection interview take place, the final ranking will be determined according to the following weightings:
- CV assessment: 50%;
- extracurricular assessment: 30%;
- selection interview: 20%.

Form of publication/notification of results:
This competition is advertised on the Ciências ULisboa and Euraxess websites.

Workplace:
The work will be developed at the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, located in Campo Grande, 1749-016 Lisbon.
SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISION:
The research will be supervised by a lecturer with a PhD from the Department of Biology at ULisboa, to be nominated by the candidate at the time of application in the declaration of acceptance by the academic supervisor.
