    Radiation transport physics, neutron and gamma-ray diagnostics, Monte Carlo methods.

  2. Description:

    A person employed as an adjunct (post-doc) for a fixed period of up to 33 Months at the Department of Radiation Transport Physics – NZ61 at IFJ PAN will be obliged to participate in research work and projects implemented or planned for the near future at the NZ61 Department.

    The main tasks of the employed person will include: research and development activities in the field of radiation transport physics, with a particular focus on neutron and gamma-ray transport. His/her main responsibilities will include the development and execution of numerical simulations of radiation transport using Monte Carlo methods in order to develop and validate neutron diagnostic methods.

    An important part of the work will involve performing numerical simulations using Monte Carlo methods, including the development and refinement of computational models, analysis of simulation results, and comparison with experimental data. The successful candidate will also contribute to the design, development, and validation of diagnostic systems, as well as to the preparation and analysis of experiments involving neutron sources.

    The scope of work will cover both the development of computational and diagnostic methods and their practical application in experimental research. The position will involve close collaboration with research teams working in the areas of plasma physics, diagnostics, measurement electronics, and numerical modelling.

The employed person will also be obliged to disseminate the research results in the form of publications in leading scientific journals indexed in the JCR and speeches during seminars and conferences, including international ones. The employee will also be obliged to apply for external funding for research.

  1. Required qualifications:
  • doctor degree in physical sciences or related disciplines: chemistry, physical chemistry or material science, (Applications may be submitted without a doctoral degree during the application period),
  • scientific achievements documented by publications in prestigious international scientific journals,
  • knowledge and current research activity in the fields of radiation transport physics, neutron diagnostics, and numerical computational methods,
  • Experience in working with scientific and research equipment, as well as in the analysis of experimental data.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a research team.
  • Good proficiency in software tools such as MS Office, MATLAB, Origin, and Corel,
  • Knowledge and practical experience with at least one of the following computational codes: MCNP, OpenMC, Geant4, or FLUKA,
  • Ability to independently identify and solve problems arising in scientific research,
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and handle stressful situations,
  • Experience in working with scientific research equipment and analysis of experimental data,
  • Ability to work in a team,
  • Very good knowledge of spoken and written English.

Welcome:

  • Ability in programming languages such as Python and/or  C/C++,
  • Familiarity with CAD software,
  • Knowledge of CAD-to-MCNP model conversion and related workflows,
  • Basic knowledge of the Polish language.

Applicants seeking employment at the IFJ PAN are required to contact the head of the NZ61 Department, assoc. prof. Urszula Wiącek (Urszula.Wiacek@ifj.edu.pl), by November 9th, 2026, who may ask the candidate to give a seminar before submitting an application; the Department Head then sends the Selection Committee a brief opinion recommending or not recommending the candidate for employment. Failure to meet with the Department Head by November 9th, 2026, will result in the application being rejected on procedural grounds

Selection process

All applications will be reviewed by the Selection Committee. Based on the submitted documentation, the Committee shall: conduct a formal review of
the application; evaluate the qualifications of candidates whose applications meet the formal requirements; and select a candidate to be interviewed. Interviews with candidates shall take place from December 1st, to December 3rd, 2026. Candidates qualified for interviews shall be notified by e-mail about the exact date of the Interview by November 20th, 2026. During the interview the candidate shall be required to give a presentation, stored on a pen drive, lasting 10 minutes at maximum which shell presenting candidate’s most important achievement,

  • The competition shall be concluded by December 15th, 2026.
  • Each candidate shall be notified by e-mail about the results of the competition.

The final decision on employing and salary shall be taken by IFJ PAN Director.

Additional comments

A person employed at the position of Assistant Professor with a postdoctoral degree (habilitation) of PLN 8,050 gross, and with a PhD degree will receive a monthly basic salary of PLN 7,250 gross.

The total amount of remuneration is influenced by additional components, such as: 

  •  length of service
  • allowance for working under conditions of exposure to ionizing radiation (if applicable)
