Offer Description
Selection procedure for 1 (one) Assistant Professor, in the area of English Studies, with an emphasis on Anglo-American Culture, within the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
By Order No. 257/R/2026, of the Rector of the University of Madeira, dated September 10, 2026, and for thirty working days, from the day immediately following that on which this Notice is published in the Diário da República, a selection procedure is open for 1 (one) Assistant Professor, in the area of English Studies, with an emphasis on Anglo-American Culture, within the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, under Article 6(2) of Decree-Law No. 122/2019 of 23 August.
The joint order No. 373/2000, of 31 March, by the Minister of State and Public Administration and the Minister for Equality, made it compulsory to include the following statement in all public service recruitment procedures: "In compliance with subparagraph h) of Article 9 of the Constitution, the Public Administration, as an employer, actively promotes a policy of equality of opportunities between men and women in access to employment and professional development, scrupulously providing for the prevention of any type of discrimination".
This selection procedure shall be conducted in accordance with the provisions of Decree-Law No. 122/2019 of 23 August, and, where they do not conflict with the aforementioned legislation, the University Teaching Career Statute (Estatuto da Carreira do Pessoal Docente Universitária (ECDU)), as approved by Decree-Law No. 448/79 of 13 November, as currently worded; the Regulation for the Recruitment, Selection and Hiring of Teaching Staff of the University of Madeira, Regulation No. 268/2014, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 122, of June 27, 2014, as amended by Regulation No. 851/2022, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 169, of 1 September 2022.
I - Admission requirements:
1 – Candidates covered by Decree-Law No. 122/2019 of 23 August may apply for the selection procedure provided they meet all the following requirements:
In accordance with Article 41-A of the ECDU, candidates must hold a PhD in the subject field of the selection procedure.
- To carry out the duties of a Foreign Language Lecturer on a full-time or exclusive dedication basis in a public higher education institution as of 01/09/2009;
1.3 To have carried out, from 01/09/2009 up to and including the 2025/2026 academic year, teaching duties at public higher education institutions under a fixed-term public employment contract in accordance with the General Labour Law in Public Functions:
- On a full-time or exclusive dedication basis, even if in other teaching categories or at a different higher education institution; or
- On a part-time basis, in other teaching categories, at a different higher education institution, or alongside full-time or full-dedication contracts, provided the gap between contracts does not exceed three months.
1.4 Candidates must also meet the general requirements for employment in public functions, as set out in Law No. 35/2014, published in the Diário da República, 1st series, No. 117, of 20 June:
a) Not to be inhibited from carrying out public service nor be forbidden to perform the functions for which they are applying;
b) Have the physical robustness and psychological profile required to carry out the duties for which they are applying;
c) Comply with compulsory vaccination.
2 - Candidates with foreign degrees must prove the equivalence, recognition or registration of their PhD degree by a Portuguese university, in accordance with the applicable legislation.
Failure to provide proof of the recognition or registration (as applicable) of their doctoral programme obtained abroad at the time of signing the contract, in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of 16 August, is grounds for exclusion.
II - Profile for which the position is open:
The position is open for the standard teaching profile 'M' (mixed profile of teaching, research and service to the University), as defined in the Faculty Workload Allocation of the University of Madeira, Regulation No. 420/2014, published in the Diário da República, 2nd Series, No. 183, on 23 September 2014.
III – Application Instructions:
1 - In accordance with the ECDU, and in line with the Regulation for the Recruitment, Selection and Hiring of Faculty Staff of the University of Madeira, the admission statement for this selection procedure, which is available on the website of the Human Resources Unit, must include the following documents:
A statement issued and certified by the candidate’s service of origin detailing their employment record from 1 September 2009 up to and including the 2025/26 academic year. It should include information on the nature of the employment relationship, the duties performed, the terms of service, the subject area, and the higher education institutions where they currently or previously worked. The statement should also detail the candidate’s current employment status, duties and terms of service.
- A curriculum vitae focusing on teaching experience and relevant activities relating to the delivery and supervision of Anglo-American culture courses or other subjects within the field of the selection procedure, in accordance with the provisions of Article 8(3) of the ECDU. The curriculum vitae must be organised according to the criteria set out in the Notice for assessing and ranking candidates. Alongside a complete list of their publications, candidates must highlight up to five publications/works that they consider to be the most representative of their contribution to the development and evolution of the subject area for which the selection procedure is open. This selection must be accompanied by a brief explanatory description in which the candidate sets out their contribution;
- A copy of the publications/works mentioned in the curriculum vitae as the most representative;
- A summary of a lesson or seminar on a topic within the subject area for which the selection procedure was opened, not exceeding two thousand words.
- Documents proving that the candidate meets the requirements set out in the Notice, in the admission requirements.
- The documents proving the fulfilment of the conditions set out in item 1.4 of this Notice may be waived if candidates declare, in the admission requirement, under a commitment of honour, that they meet such requirements. Candidates filling the position must provide documents to support the information they have provided in their application.
- - Applications must be submitted on a specific form, which is available on the website of the Human Resources Unit of the University of Madeira, completed in Portuguese, which, together with the attached documents, must be delivered in paper format, and in person to the Human Resources Unit, located at Colégio dos Jesuítas, Rua dos Ferreiros, 9000-082, Funchal, during office hours (10:00-12:30 and 14:30-16:00), or sent by registered post before the closing date for applications.
- Candidates must also send an expression of interest (application), by email, to procedimentos.concursais@mail.uma.pt, before the closing date for applications, together with all the documents required in the notice, in portable document format (PDF) (file names shall not exceed 15 characters), using a link with no expiration date.
Candidates must also indicate the number of the selection procedure notice they are applying for in the email subject line and list the PDF documents they are sending in the email body.
5 - In accordance with Article 13(1)(g) of the Regulation for the Recruitment, Selection and Hiring of Teaching Staff of the University of Madeira, the jury may request additional documentation relating to the CV and other documents submitted.
6 - The application must be organised in the order set out in the notice.
7- The required documents must be presented in Portuguese or English.
8 - The preceding paragraph does not apply to teaching materials, which must be provided in the language of instruction to which they relate.
9 - Failure to submit an application and supporting documents that fully and explicitly comply with the requirements set out in Section III, in terms of both form and content; or failure to meet the deadline for submitting the application, in hard and digital copy formats; or failure to submit, or the late submission of, any of the mandatory documents referred to in the sub-points of Section III, is grounds for exclusion.
IV - Admission to the competition:
1 - Following analysis of the applications, the Rector will notify the candidates of their admission or exclusion from the selection procedure based on whether they meet the requirements laid down therein.
V – Selection process:
1. The selection process involves public competency assessment tests, comprising:
a) An evaluation of the candidate’s CV, focusing particularly on their teaching experience and relevant activities in the training and delivery of modern language courses or other subjects, in accordance with Article 8(3) of the ECDU;
(b) The presentation of a lesson or seminar on a topic chosen by the candidates within the subject area.
1.1 - The assessment and discussion of the candidate’s CV will be conducted in accordance with the selection criteria, weighting and evaluation parameters set out in Section VIII of the Notice.
When assessing the candidate’s CV, merit shall be the only factor considered. Consequently, the candidate’s previous experience in the subject area for which the selection procedure is open shall be evaluated in accordance with the selection criteria and assessment parameters set out in this notice. The jury shall refrain from evaluating the candidate’s merit and experience in other areas.
1.2 - The assessment of the seminar or lesson shall comply with the selection criteria, weighting and assessment parameters described herein.
2 – Public assessments tests and the meeting for evaluating and ranking candidates
2.1 – Public competency assessment tests may be held in two sessions on consecutive days.
2.2 – The President of the Jury is responsible for leading the public tests, but other members of the Jury may also interact with the candidates. The tests shall be conducted in Portuguese, unless any candidate or member of the Jury is not proficient in Portuguese. In this case, the President of the jury may decide to use English or another language.
2.3 — The lesson or seminar will last a total of 60 minutes. Afterwards, it will be assessed and discussed by the jury. The discussion will last the same length as the lesson or seminar.
3 - Failure to attend the tests at the specified time and venue will result in exclusion from the selection procedure.
3.1 - Once the test are over, the jury will meet to assess the results and reach a decision.
3.2 - Considering the final marks awarded by each jury member in accordance with point VIII, the jury will rank the successful candidates using the methodology set out in item IX and draft the final decision.
3.3 - If the jury fails to select any candidates, the selection procedure will be declared void.
3.4- In accordance with the provisions of item VI of this Notice, candidates will be notified of the draft final decision, which contains the list setting out the proposed ranking of the selected candidates, as well as the list of excluded candidates.
3.5 - If any candidate chooses to make a statement at the hearing for interested parties, the jury will hold a third meeting to consider the arguments put forward. The jury's decisions will be communicated to the candidates in accordance with item VI of this notice.
3.6 - If the jury finds the allegations to be well-founded, it will act in accordance with its deliberations and notify the candidates.
3.7 - If the jury considers the allegations to be unfounded once the candidates have been notified, it shall submit the process to the Rector for approval.
3.8 - In accordance with the provisions of item VI of this notice, all candidates will be notified of the decision regarding the approval of their applications. Candidates may view the selection procedure file by prior appointment, which must be requested by email to procedimentos.concursais@mail.uma.pt, and addressed to the President of the Jury.
VI - Selection procedure
a) The application submission period;
b) Requesting additional documentation;
c) Public competency assessment tests;
d) Seriation of eligible candidates, issuance of the final decision, and publication of the minutes and the ordered list of approved candidates;
e) Sending the documents to the Rector;
f) Homologation of the results of the selection procedures and its minutes by the Rector and notification of the results.
VII - Composition of the Jury:
In accordance with Article 53(2) of the Regulation for the Recruitment, Selection and Hiring of Teaching Staff of the University of Madeira, Regulation No. 268/2014, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 122, of 27 June 2014, with the new wording given by Regulation No. 851/2022, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 169, of 1 September 2022, the jury comprises the following members:

VIII – Assessment criteria, weighting and final marking system:
1- Selection method and criteria:
Selection method: public competency assessment tests (100 %).
2- Selection criteria: Assessment of candidates’ CVs and presentation of a lesson or seminar, followed by discussion. This will be assessed in accordance with the parameters and weightings set out below.
2.1 - Assessment and discussion of the candidate’s CV, with a weighting of 50%, considering the following assessment criteria:
- Teaching activity - 40%;
- Research activities and knowledge valorisation - 50%
Academic service activities and university management - 10%
- The following parameters should be considered for each of these criteria:
- Teaching activity - Evaluation in this component will consider the following specific criteria and parameters:
- Coordination and teaching of curricular units, at a higher education level, within different study cycles, particularly within the field of the selection procedure - 55%;
- Supervision of undergraduate and master’s students or of courses/activities not awarding degrees — 15%;
- Enhancing pedagogical projects, including new curricular units, developing teaching laboratories and similar activities; exchange, mobility and cooperation actions — 15%;
- Production of pedagogical material, including books, articles in pedagogical publications and other documents to support students, and pedagogical innovation activities or development of pedagogical laboratories - 15%;
- Research activities and knowledge valorisation - Evaluation in this component will consider the following specific criteria and parameters:
Scientific output in the form of authorship of articles in scientific journals, books, book chapters and conference proceedings in the field of the selection procedure. This parameter should consider the importance of the works that have been selected by the candidate as most representative, particularly regarding the development of the subject area(s) for which the selection procedure is open - 55%;
Coordination and participation in national and international research projects, research units and networks, particularly within the subject area(s) of the selection procedure - 10%;
Supervision of doctoral or postdoctoral students - 10%;
Editing scientific books and participating in scientific committees and conference organising committees - 10%;
- Other activities and awards demonstrating scientific merit and national and international acknowledgement, and university outreach activities, scientific dissemination, the valorisation and transfer of knowledge, and innovation - 15%.
- Academic service activities and university management - Evaluation in this component will consider the following specific criteria and parameters:
- Participation in university management and coordination positions, within units and organic subunits and degree programmes — 30%;
- Participation in academic evaluation activities, namely juries of academic exams and career selection procedures — 35%;
- Participation in other tasks assigned by the management bodies that fall within the university teaching activity - 35%.
2.3 - Assessment of a lesson or seminar on a topic falling within the subject area and sub-area for which the selection procedure is open, with a weighting of 50%, considering the following assessment criteria:
2.3.1 – Planning: Quality of the detailed lesson plan, including objectives, teaching strategies, teaching materials, digital resources, bibliography and pedagogical thinking – 50%.
2.3.2 – Performance: Quality of performance (mastery of subject content, organisation and progression of content, and clarity and rigour of presentation and discussion) – 50%.
IX — Final ordering of candidates and voting methodology:
1 — Before the voting process begins, each jury member must submit a signed document setting out their ranking of the candidates, which will be attached to the minutes, duly substantiated, and based on the evaluation and ranking criteria set out in this notice;
2 — During the successive voting rounds, each jury member must abide by the ranking they have submitted in the document referred to in the preceding paragraph;
3— Abstentions are not allowed during the voting process.
4— The jury will use the following voting method to obtain an absolute majority for the final ranking of the candidates:
a) The first voting round is intended to determine the candidate to be ranked first;
i) If a candidate obtains an absolute majority of the votes for the first place, he/she wins the selection procedure and is removed from subsequent ballots. The procedure for determining the second-place candidate shall then begin;
ii) If none of the candidates obtain an absolute majority of the votes for first place, a further voting round will be held, only among those who received votes for the first place, after the candidate who received the fewest votes for that place has been removed;
iii) If there is a tie between two or more candidates for the least-voted position, another ballot will be held to determine which of the least-voted applicants shall be eliminated;
iv) If there is still a tie between two or more candidates for least-voted positions, but the number of candidates in that position has been reduced, a new tie-breaking ballot shall be held, only between those candidates, counting the number of relative first positions, the least voted shall be removed;
v) If there is still a tie between two or more candidates for the least-voted position and the number of candidates has not been reduced, the President of the Jury shall have the casting vote;
vi) If there is a tie when there are only two candidates left to be considered for first place, the President of the Jury shall have the casting vote;
b) Once a candidate has been ranked first, he or she shall be removed from the ballot and the entire process is repeated for second place, and so forth, until an ordered list of all candidates is complete.
