About

Outline

Course Description:

Cancer cells must acquire several biological properties in order to survive, proliferate, disseminate and become malignant. These hallmarks of cancer comprise sustaining proliferative signaling, evading growth suppressors, resisting cell death, and activating invasion/metastasis, all of which conspire to lead to pathologically high growth rate, and ultimately tumorigenesis. In the last ten years, an increasing body of research coming from the use of innovative large-scale genomics, proteomics and metabolomics profiling suggests that most and perhaps all human tumors display a metabolic plasticity that transformed cells undergo to survive the adverse tumor microenvironment conditions. Thus, metabolic reprogramming has become an additional hallmark of cancer, which is an example of a genetic human disease with metabolic alterations. This has led scientists to investigate the intricate metabolic plasticity besides the Warburg effect, and to dissect metabolic pathways like glutamine and lipid/fatty acid metabolism, among others, which play critical roles in cancer growth and are thus potential molecular target to develop novel therapeutics strategies.

The partnership of the ITN Marie Curie project Translating the role of mitochondria in tumorigenesis (TRANSMIT) organizes a course in Cancer Metabolism, that will deliver the most up-to-date discoveries in the field of metabolic plasticity, adaptation, bioenergetics remodeling and so forth, bringing young researchers in contact with eminent international scientists in the field. To this aim, the consortium will offer 20 fellowships to as many external young researchers working in the field coming from all over the world. Participants will be selected exclusively on the basis of their curriculum and letters of references, by a TRANSMIT internal Board.

What is funded

Thanks to the support of the European Commission, TRANSMIT offers 20 fellowships to PhD students and Post-doc fellows with CV in the related fields. Each fellowship will cover the registration fee and full board accommodation during the course (only travel expenses will not be covered by TRANSMIT). Curricula will be evaluated by a TRANSMIT internal Board.

Course tuition fee and accommodation (No travel costs).

Duration

2-day course (November 29-30, 2018).

Course Venue and transportation:

The University Residential Centre of Bertinoro (http://www.ceub.it/?lang=en) is located 80 km away from Bologna International Airport (BLQ). Concerning your flight reservation, please consider that two shuttle buses will leave from Bologna airport to the Course Venue. More info will be published on the TRANSMIT website (www.transmit-project.eu) in due time.
